Opus was established in 2002 to fill evolving and unmet needs of institutional pension plans. We specialize in bringing prudence and professionalism to investment situations that are outside the ordinary purview of plan staff and general pension consultants.
Our clients are typically medium to large plans ($300 million to $10 billion), with a multiplicity of investment managers and a network of service providers. Opus has extensive experience working for multi-employer plans. We routinely report to jointly trusteed boards and are familiar with the challenges facing them. Importantly, we are accustomed to working in an ERISA environment and accept our fiduciary responsibility.
Opus’s staff is comprised of experienced and credentialed investment professionals. Unlike many firms, the majority of our day-to-day work is performed by senior professionals rather than junior analysts. Opus is a registered investment adviser in the state of California, and our staff retains requisite registrations and certifications.
As a special-situation consultant, we do not exhibit some of the potential conflicts of interest that may confront other firms. For example, we do not pursue general consulting assignments. Thus we can review the work of a general pension consultant with minimal concern that we are trying to take their business or copy their proprietary methods. Further, we do not have a vested interest in utilizing a particular group of investment managers or a particular investment style (e.g., active equity management). Finally, we do not act as investment manager, nor do we have an affiliate that does.
